The 16 PSL teams will go up against 8 NFD teams and 8 from the ABC Motsepe and SAB leagues. Steenberg United was last season’s Western Cape Region’s representatives, they made it to the round of 16 where they lost 2-0 away to PSL side Baroka.
This weekend the ABC Motsepe League Western Cape Region kicked off. We had three fixtures on Friday night and another and four played on Saturday.
FRIDAY NIGHT ACTION
Jomo Power was at home to take on D&G Orient at Robinvale and they beat them by a single goal.
At the Westridge, Oval Ikapa Sporting went up against Steenberg United and suffered a 0-1 loss.
League pacesetters Houtbay United played Zizwe United at home. The visitors held on for the 0-1win.
At Lansdowne, there was a clash of the big guns. Two of the current log leaders Santos and the Magic who went up against each other. The Magic won by one goal to nil
Rookies Battalions and Morning Stars went up against each in Wellington. The game ended 1-all but the home team won 4-2 on penalties to progress to the next round.
FN Rangers ensured they had the biggest winning margin of the round by beating Royal Blues 3-1 Royal Road Sports Complex in Maitland.
Grassy Park United would have had a point to prove when they went up against Glendene United. They’ve already met in the league this season and Glendene were the winners by a 2-0 margin. Grassy Park home ground woes continued as Glendene won 0-1 at William Herbert.
Mbekweni Cosmos progressed straight to the next round because Ajax Cape Town’s senior side gets preference in competing in the Nedbank Cup, therefore Ajax ABC team does not qualify in participating in this competition.
One thing this round showed us that home ground advantage counted for nothing, as four home sides went down to the same 0-1 scoreline.
